# Server-Side Template Injection

{% embed url="<https://book.hacktricks.xyz/pentesting-web/ssti-server-side-template-injection>" %}

Different template engines use different syntaxes. Try to identify the type of template engine used with payloads such as these:

```
{{7*7}}
${7*7}
<%= 7*7 %>
${{7*7}}
#{7*7}
```

If the result is 49, then you know what the syntax is. From there, try to identify the specific template engine used and see if there's an exploit you can use for that specific template engine.

*Note: When reading the SSTI HackTricks article, then keep in mind that it doesn't seem to list the vulnerable template engine versions. For example, the Handlebars.js exploit listed there is patched in newer versions. Also, even in older versions, at least when I tried it, the exploit shown there didn't work, and you had to use a* [*workaround*](https://licenciaparahackear.github.io/en/posts/bypassing-a-restrictive-js-sandbox/) *to get it working (`require()` wasn't loaded).*

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://heinosass.gitbook.io/leet-sheet/web-app-hacking/server-attacks/server-side-template-injection.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
